Exploring Artistic Engagement Through Archives: My Journey with CollectionBuilder

In the world of library and information sciences, practical experience with digital tools can be both enlightening and essential. My recent involvement with CollectionBuilder during the LIS Student Program has been a transformative journey into the intersection of technology and art history. This digital project has allowed me to explore how contemporary Chinese artists engage with archival materials, tracing influences and reinterpretations from 1978 to the present.

My Project: Reimaging Archive in Contemporary Chinese Art

My project focuses on the rich tapestry of modern and contemporary art from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, showcasing significant artworks that engage with cultural and historical archives. The current centerpiece is the iconic portrait of Mao Zedong by Zhang Zheishi—a powerful example of historical imagery being reinterpreted through modern artistic lenses. Another notable inclusion is “Tiananmen” by Zeng Fanzhi, which further illustrates how contemporary artists delve into and draw from pivotal moments captured in archives.

Zhang Zhengshi’s portrait of Mao Zedong is perhaps one of the most reproduced images in history, prominently displayed in Tiananmen Square and ingrained in the cultural memory of China. This portrait depicts Mao in a simplistic, idealized manner, embodying the strength and paternal benevolence the Communist Party sought to project. It’s a portrayal crafted to solidify the leader’s mythic status among the masses.

In contrast, Zeng Fanzhi’s “Tiananmen” takes a more nuanced approach. Known for his Mask series, where figures are depicted with exaggerated and grotesque features hidden behind masks, Zeng’s depiction of historical and symbolic landscapes often carries a sense of emotional conflict and personal reflection. His interpretation of Tiananmen Square, therefore, is not just a geographical location but a space loaded with historical weight and personal introspection.

Therefore, Zeng Fanzhi’s “Tiananmen” can be seen as a direct dialogue with Zhang Zhengshi’s portrayal of Mao. Embarking on the creation of a digital exhibit with CollectionBuilder presented a unique set of challenges that provided me with a steep learning curve and valuable insights into the world of digital curation. One of the initial hurdles was the customization of the platform. CollectionBuilder, while user-friendly, involves a number of sophisticated tools and settings that required some time to master. The complexity of my project, which aimed to illustrate the intricate relationships between original archival works and their contemporary reinterpretations, necessitated a deep dive into these tools to ensure that the final product was both functional and reflective of my academic vision.

Another significant challenge was designing the project in a way that encourages user interaction and exploration. Each obstacle provided a learning opportunity, and over time, I became more adept at leveraging the platform’s capabilities to enhance my project’s educational and aesthetic value.

From January to late April, these resources played a pivotal role in enhancing my understanding and skills. The sessions, led by a team of knowledgeable and approachable instructors, covered a wide range of topics from the basics of setting up a digital collection to more complex tasks like customizing visual elements and integrating interactive features.

A big thank you to Devin, Olivia, Evan, and Julia—I really appreciate all the guidance and support they provided. They truly deserve immense credit for their patience and expertise. They were not only adept at explaining the technical aspects of the platform but also exceptionally skilled at fostering an environment conducive to learning. Their approach was hands-on, allowing us to immediately apply what we learned in practical scenarios. This experiential learning process helped cement my understanding of the tools and their applications in real-world projects.

Furthermore, the collaborative atmosphere of the sessions, enriched by the participation of many peers, was equally instrumental in my learning journey. Engaging with fellow students who shared similar interests and challenges fostered a rich exchange of ideas and provided multiple perspectives on tackling problems. This community aspect was vital in inspiring creativity and encouraging problem-solving approaches that I might not have considered on my own. The network of peers also provided moral support, making the daunting task of learning a new digital tool much more manageable and enjoyable.
